Tinpot Hut wines are made primarily from fruit grown on winemaker Fiona Turner’s vineyard in Blind River. Fiona, who has worked with Matt Thomson for a number of years, supplements her own grapes with fruit from other growers in Marlborough for a bit of varietal variety. The tinpot hut that gave its name to Fiona’s wines is an old mustering hut in the remote hills between the Wairau and Awatere Valleys. The huts were used as a base for musterers as they rounded up the sheep that had been in the hills from spring to autumn. The name links Marlborough’s past as a sheep farming centre with its current state as one of the world’s most dynamic wine regions. Now it’s time to muster your mates and slake your summer thirst with a bottle or few of this superbly sipping Savvy. Pick up at least 6 of these beauties and shipping’s on us.  Now that’s a deal!

What: Superbly sipping Savvy from mythic Marlborough

Where: Country-New Zealand Region-Marlborough

When: 2013

Closure: Screw Cap

Tech: After harvest, the fruit was transported to the winery for immediate pressing, with minimal skin contact to prevent juice deterioration. Shortly after fermentation in Stainless steel tanks, each batch was assessed and the best parcels were selected and blended before bottling.

Taste: Pale lemon in colour with intense, lifted aromas of lemongrass and thyme with passion fruit notes. A complex, gob smacking palate that shines through with loads blackcurrant bud and sweet green herbs; with underlying ripe fruit and mineral notes. A pleasingly rich and powerful Sauvignon Blanc with well-balanced acidity and a long lingering finish. It’s my pick for cooling down after a long, hot summer day.

Meet the winemaker:
Fiona Turner, winemaker and director,  worked in New Zealand for Sacred Hill in Hawkes Bay and Vavasour in Marlborough, before landing her ‘dream job’ as winemaking consultant for international ‘flying winemaker’ Matt Thomson.
Now working alongside Matt, Fiona consults to many of Marlborough’s best known wineries and makes wine under her own label, Tinpot Hut. Fiona and her husband Hamish run a 50 acre vineyard in the Blind River sub-region of Marlborough, the fruit from which goes into the Tinpot Hut Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.
